The Introduction In the corporate world, it is said that a clear red flag during an job interview when any of the employee of the company tells you, “We are like family around here.” When you hear that, you run for the hills and don’t look back. During the 1950s and 60s, when the ideal nuclear family unit was being promoted to America as the ultimate way of life (mostly by Evangelicals because of the design by God)–then with the social upheaval of the late 60s and 70s, that ideal fell apart....

The Introduction I want to look at these letters from Paul to Timothy and Titus and to a bigger extend, to the churches in Ephesus and in Crete within the both the grace and pastoral leadership of our Lord Jesus Christ. Paul makes the dire plea to both pastors to put intentional, willing, qualified elders to care for the church. Why is that? It is both to protect, love, and care for the sheep (John 21) and to be on an offensive front against those who would oppose the church....

The Introduction If you pay too close attention to social media, it is quite popular to love certain parts of the Bible and then dislike certain parts of the Bible. To believe and trust in God, that will happened–especially at the beginning of your faith. But this sort of like/dislike has morphed into a different beast altogether: love and embracing some Scriptures and completely hating other parts. The most common: loving the Gospels–the defense is “Well, they are about Jesus Christ....

The Introduction We are coming to the third volume of Paul’s Pastoral Letters. Initially, one set of letters were written to Timothy, a pastor in in the ancient city of Ephesus, which is located in on the coast of present day Turkey. The other was written to another pastor, Titus, who lived in the Greek island of Crete. These were little letters of instruction, encouragement, and exhortation. Little in size but in ultimately shaping the way, standing up the building studs upon the solid rock foundation of Jesus Christ for the next 2000 years and beyond....

The Introduction We have reached the end of the second letter of Timothy. Let me remind us what was the purpose of Paul in writing this letter not only to Timothy or to the church in Ephesus but to the people of God as a whole. In Paul’s first letter, he called out what Christians now get to do. In other words, since we are in Christ, how do we get to serve, minister, give, assemble, worship, and pray among many things....

The Introduction 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (CSB) All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. Because the Bible is supernaturally inspired by the Almighty God on high, what are we to do with this word? The Bible is outside-of-us, beyond-us, greater than our intellect, bigger than our emotions, grander than our hearts, and more powerful than our wills....

The Introduction It’s been a moment since we have been in the Pastoral Epistles. We made the distinction between the two letters, written by Paul, to the young pastor of the church of Ephesus. First letter to Timothy was Paul’s instruction and guidance on how elders and deacons are to minister to the church–including the qualifications and character of the ministers. We are in chapter 3 of the second letter to Timothy....

The Introduction Walking through the Paul’s second letter to Timothy has really been a walkthrough to how God really saves us–beyond the sinner’s prayer when we were little kids. In everything, we should praise God - 2 Timothy 1:1-7 We are saved only by God - 1:8-12 We are to be instructed by God - 1:13-2:2 We have been made fully alive by God - 2:3-14 We can understand the absolute truth by God - 2:15-19 We are chosen by God - 2:20-26 All of those wonderful things don’t come fast nor cheap....

The Introduction To be saved by God is an amazing thing. First of all, it is beyond our own goodness–I don’t care how much self-righteousness you think you have. Second of all, it is beyond our own power–you and I are too terribly weak to save ourselves. Lastly, it is beyond our will. Let me put that into plain English: apart from God, we do not want any part of God....

The Introduction Last week, we examine our lives in Christ and by Christ and how it looks much different than living in this world. Paul calls us soldiers, athletes, and farmers–not in the way that you might think. (2 Timothy 2:3-7) We are to suffer like Christ, receive righteousness by Christ and let the indwelling of the Spirit produce fruit in us like Christ. Out of that, we preach and live our lives out for the sake of the gospel....

The Introduction Is the gospel of God and the word of God relevant to our culture today? As the tides of history continuously move on, the world will come up with a set of questions that they think are original. But the why and the heart of those questions are all the same. We have questions on same-sex attraction and those who say, “there is nothing wrong with it” would point out that the Bible never mentions “homosexuality” and “those passages in Leviticus, the Gospels, and Romans are all outdated and don’t mean what you think they mean....

The Introduction I told you that in Paul’s second letter to Timothy, Paul is going to get a lot more personal–not only speaking to Timothy but calling out a few people in Timothy’s church by name. I have often preached against gossip and slander. Is this what Paul did? We are about to find out but that is not the point of the passage. What is the point is what God has done and what is this new life we get to live all because of what God has done in us....

The Introduction With both 1st and 2nd Timothy, we have the tale of two letters. In Paul’s first letter, the overarching theme and testimony is “This is what you need to do in order to minister to you church.” It dealt with a lot of the problems that churches and the people of God have not outgrown and evolved past ever since Adam and Eve. But in Paul’s second letter, this now deals with the person that is Timothy....

The Introduction You have walked with us through Paul’s first letter to Timothy. Remember all the things that Paul addressed and helped Pastor Timothy with? teaching false doctrine listening to silly, pointless myths leaving the church leaving the faith loud rambunctious overly rebellious against authorities corporately worshipping God while hating and despising others women dressing immodestly overly aggressive women passive men unqualified leaders entertaining demons demonic teaching anti-gospel teaching ageism lack of support for widows not honoring elders not paying full-time elders prejudice favoritism lack of self-care rich people That is a truckload of ministry and learning how to minister....

The Introduction Paul has written many epistles–which is another fancy word for “letter”. No doubt he was a prolific epistle writer. He has written many letters but only a handful of them have made their way into our Biblical canon as Scripture. In all of his church letters to the church in Rome, Corinth, Galatia, and Ephesus, among others, we call these particular letters to the pastors Timothy and Titus, “The Pastoral Letters”....

The Introduction Acts 16:1-5 (CSB) Paul went on to Derbe and Lystra, where there was a disciple named Timothy, the son of a believing Jewish woman, but his father was a Greek. 2 The brothers and sisters at Lystra and Iconium spoke highly of him. 3 Paul wanted Timothy to go with him; so he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those places, since they all knew that his father was a Greek....

The Introduction We are focusing on the gospel implications of Paul’s letters to Pastor Timothy of the Church in Ephesus. What is the good news that we can draw out of these letters. Paul is writing to Timothy to encourage him, urge him on, stand his ground, flee from sin, and shepherd his people–which includes pastoring and preaching and teaching to his congregation. Last week, we see Paul to admonish both to young Timothy and his church to be content in everything–especially with money and provisions....

The Introduction The Text 1 Timothy 6:2-10 (CSB) Teach and encourage these things. 3 If anyone teaches false doctrine and does not agree with the sound teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ and with the teaching that promotes godliness, 4 he is conceited and understands nothing, but has an unhealthy interest in disputes and arguments over words. From these come envy, quarreling, slander, evil suspicions, 5 and constant disagreement among people whose minds are depraved and deprived of the truth, who imagine that godliness is a way to material gain....

The Introduction The Text 1 Timothy 6:1-2 (CSB) All who are under the yoke as slaves should regard their own masters as worthy of all respect, so that God’s name and his teaching will not be blasphemed. Let those who have believing masters not be disrespectful to them because they are brothers, but serve them even better, since those who benefit from their service are believers and dearly loved....

The Introduction The Text 1 Timothy 5:17-25 (CSB) The elders who are good leaders are to be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching. 18 For the Scripture says: Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain, and, “The worker is worthy of his wages.”> 19 Don’t accept an accusation against an elder unless it is supported by two or three witnesses....

The Introduction The Text 1 Timothy 5:3-16 (CSB) Support widows who are genuinely in need. 4 But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them learn to practice godliness toward their own family first and to repay their parents, for this pleases God. 5 The widow who is truly in need and left all alone has put her hope in God and continues night and day in her petitions and prayers; 6 however, she who is self-indulgent is dead even while she lives....

The Introduction The Text 1 Timothy 4:11 - 5:2 (CSB) Command and teach these things. Don’t let anyone despise your youth, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity. Until I come, give your attention to public reading, exhortation, and teaching. Don’t neglect the gift that is in you; it was given to you through prophecy, with the laying on of hands by the council of elders....

The Introduction The Text 1 Timothy 4:6-10 (CSB) If you point these things out to the brothers and sisters, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, nourished by the words of the faith and the good teaching that you have followed. But have nothing to do with pointless and silly myths. Rather, train yourself in godliness. For the training of the body has limited benefit, but godliness is beneficial in every way, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come....

The Introduction The Text 1 Timothy 4:1-5 (CSB) Now the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will depart from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and the teachings of demons, through the hypocrisy of liars whose consciences are seared. They forbid marriage and demand abstinence from foods that God created to be received with gratitude by those who believe and know the truth. For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, since it is sanctified by the word of God and by prayer....

The Introduction The Text 1 Timothy 3:14-16 (CSB) I write these things to you, hoping to come to you soon. But if I should be delayed, I have written so that you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth. And most certainly, the mystery of godliness is great: He was manifested in the flesh,...

The Introduction The Text 1 Timothy 3:8-13 (CSB) Deacons, likewise, should be worthy of respect, not hypocritical, not drinking a lot of wine, not greedy for money, holding the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. They must also be tested first; if they prove blameless, then they can serve as deacons. Wives, likewise, should be worthy of respect, not slanderers, self-controlled, faithful in everything. Deacons are to be husbands of one wife, managing their children and their own households competently....

The Text 1 Timothy 3:1–7 (CSB) 1 This saying is trustworthy: “If anyone aspires to be an overseer, he desires a noble work.” 2 An overseer, therefore, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, self-controlled, sensible, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not an excessive drinker, not a bully but gentle, not quarrelsome, not greedy. 4 He must manage his own household competently and have his children under control with all dignity....

The Introduction The Text 1 Timothy 2:8-15 (CSB) Therefore, I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or argument. Also, the women are to dress themselves in modest clothing, with decency and good sense, not with elaborate hairstyles, gold, pearls, or expensive apparel, but with good works, as is proper for women who profess to worship God. A woman is to learn quietly with full submission....

The Introduction Just in previous chapter, Paul exhorts Timothy to remember the prophecies made about Timothy in order to keep the good fight–because apart from the grace of God, we are a plethora of tiny, micro decisions from shipwrecking our faith. Paul encourages us to fight the good fight of faith. How do we do that? Paul goes on: The Text 1 Timothy 2:1-7 (CSB) First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all those who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity....

The Introduction The Text 1 Timothy 1:18-20 (CSB) Timothy, my son, I am giving you this instruction in keeping with the prophecies previously made about you, so that by recalling them you may fight the good fight, having faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and have shipwrecked the faith. Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have delivered to Satan, so that they may be taught not to blaspheme....

The Introduction The Text 1 Timothy 1:12-17 (CSB) I give thanks to Christ Jesus our Lord who has strengthened me, because he considered me faithful, appointing me to the ministry— even though I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an arrogant man. But I received mercy because I acted out of ignorance in unbelief, and the grace of our Lord overflowed, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus....
