Now Sings My Soul: Psalm 23:3b He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake

My Precious God,

I am often reminded of my sinful ways of the past. As the vines grew up from my heart and slowly and surely tightened around my neck as I continuously die without thought

But you, my God, broke the spell of the sin over my life.

But time after time, I see those weeds grow. I feel the cancer thriving in my heart. I sense the sin that crouches for me and waits to pierce my soul with his poison.

But you see it, too,

You come down and burn those weeds with extreme prejudice. You come in like the perfect surgeon, with a laser scalpel and burn away those cells, leaving only a soft and tender heart. You come into your pasture and violently bash in the head of the serpent with the heel of your foot.

You have sent your Spirit to walk, lead, and guide me through the darkest valleys. But I never fear. You are my Lord and God. Protector. Giver. Beloved.

I praise and adore you forever.

Now Sings My Soul: Psalm 23:3a He Restores My Soul

My Lord,

I perish without you.

I cannot live without you.

Apart from you., the hole in my inner being remained infinitely empty. Without you, I strived and pushed and pulled and made idols and did whatever I need to do in order to fill my soul.

But all of it comes up empty.

But you, O Lord, not only fills my heart to the brim but gives my soul brand new life. Now, I run after you. Now I walk with you. Now you are with me and I am with you forever.

Lord, give me the fullness of your Spirit so I might walk in your statues and obey your commands. More than that, that I would have the strength to do you what you have called me to do.

For my joy and your glory.

Forevermore.

I love you.

Now Sings My Soul: Psalm 23:2b He Leads Me Beside Still Waters

My Lord, You are the fountain of true life. I am dead without you. It is not that I can find this water on my own. For I am lost. and, my soul is dried-up and dead. I have no wisdom, strength, or spirit to find you. But you, O Lord, rescued me. You have brought me into your life and in your life alone, I am fully alive. My soul is no longer dried in sin but restored, covered, and filled with your never-ending grace. God, please keep me close so that I stay refreshed and satisfied in all of life.

Now Sings My Soul: Psalm 23:2a He makes me lie down in green pastures

My Lord,

You are the Prince of Peace. Where you are, there I find satisfaction of my wearied soul and find perfect peace where I can truly rest.

Apart from you, I die and I perish. Away from you, I am only tormented by confusion and despair. Without you, there is nothing but destructions by my own hands and by everything around me.

But you, O Lord, call me to enter through you and abide in you. Once I am in your good graces, you take the back-breaking weight of sin off me and place it upon you. Once more, you lay your light, featherweight righteousness upon me. I am no longer under crushing condemnation nor your furious wrath but yet, within the protection of your great arm and the coolness within your great fortress, that is the Rock of Ages.

Once more, you are the truth. While my heart strays and wanders from you, you are the Good Shepherd who would gladly chase me down and bring home over and over again. Because you alone have the words of eternal life, I have nowhere else to go but to come home with you.

I thank you for healing my broken heart and mind. I thank you for opening my eyes, ears, and mouth of your glory and goodness. I thank you for giving me strength for you are Christ Jesus my Lord forever.

Now Sings My Soul: Psalm 23:1b I Shall Not Want

My Lord Above,

I thank you for your perfect provision.

You are my Good Father in heaven and because I am your child, you have always provided for me.

When I was younger, I wanted many things but you did not provide them. But looking back, those things I wanted would have harmed me or cause me to turn away from you. But what you have always done is gave something even better, which turned out to be actually good.

It is by your hand alone that I have shelter over my head, food in my stomach, and water upon my dried tongue. It is by your strength I am able to stand and work and seek out accomplishments which is the work you have provided for me to do for your glory.

But more than that, you are my All-in-all because you gave me everything when you gave me your Son in Christ Jesus.

Since I have your love, your Son, and your Spirit, you have given me so much that heaven and earth can give me no more.

I will praise you with every single breath you give me.

And I will love you with all the love you have given me.

Now Sings My Soul: Psalm 23:1a The Lord Is My Shepherd

You are my Good Shepherd.

You fled the ninety-nine in order to come rescue me,
when I could not possibly rescue myself.

You saved me from certain damnation,
you’ve rescued me from the slaughter.

You’ve taken all of my sin,
and you let the wrath of Father fall upon your heart
You bled out for me,
so that I might live forever.

Lord, keep me in your care,
I pray that you keep good shepherds to care and feed me.
none that will run away at the first sight of danger
none that will be swayed to and fro by every wind of doctrine
but stay the course because you are their strength and resolve.

I praise your holy name ever.

Now Sings My Soul: Psalm 22:25-31

My Worthy Lord,

Let my words and my songs be a sweetness to your ears.

For I know that you sit on the throne of our praises because you are the God who alone saves.

I know that not only are you willing and able to save, you and you alone are the only one who is mighty to save.

So I praise you with all of my breath and strength and life.

And you have commissioned me to go tell everyone everywhere of everything that you have done. That if they turn to you, you will save them, even in their deepest, darkest despair.

So I preach of you and your great gospel.

Until every knee bows and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, my Rock, and my Redeemer forever.

Now Sings My Soul: Psalm 22:22-24

My God in Heaven,

There is none like you!

You are God who sits high above all of my sins, my hardness, my wickedness, my trespasses and my calamity. You are exalted far above all of my gods.

But in your steadfast love, abounding grace, and tender mercies, you saved me! You sent your son, Jesus Christ, to come live and die for me. More than that, your Son rose from the grave and conquered all of the sins, hell, Satan, demons, and death once and for all.

Now I live to you and for you and with you and you are with me and in me forever.

What can I do but give you thanks and sing praises to you for all of my days?

What else can I do but tell the world that you alone are God and you alone are mighty to save?

I will tell the world that if they turn their face towards you, you will bring them in and you will save them.

Because you are God.

Series: As a young believer, I have not had the chance to read all the way through the Bible. The Psalms and Proverbs will be the last books before I finish the Old Testament in Ezekiel, Daniel, then Isaiah. As I read through the Psalms, I was struck by the very personal and intimate nature of the Psalms despite the deep theological, doctrinal, and Christocentric focus of the written songs themselves.  Using the Psalms as a mere template and an outline, how I would I respond? So doing just that, I began writing out prayers based on each of the Psalms.

Now Sings My Soul: Psalm 22:19-21

Almighty God,

Who are you, my Lord, whose glory fills the entire earth? Whether I am in the heavens or make my bed in hell, you are there with me. If I ascend the mountain of your glory or wander in the desert of the wilderness, you are face to face and closer than a whisper.

My God, you are never far! You are with me! Always. While I might feel desperate or despair sadness or anger or happiness, you are with me and within me.

You are at work in my soul and heart. Because you are at work, I know that it is you that gives me true life and the fullness thereof. For once I was lost, now found. Blind, now I can see. Deaf, now can hear. Mute, now preach your gospel. Ignorant of unbelief, now I know you.

Once dead, now fully alive.

You’ve sent your Son to die in my place for my sins so I can be with you. His cross is where my enemies were trampled underfoot and their teeth shattered. It is his empty grave where the bulls’ necks are broken by burying my sin and to stay buried forevermore.

You alone are worthy of my praise. Blessed be your name forever!.

Now Sings My Soul: Psalm 22:12-18

Dear God,

My enemies are on all sides and their attacks are relentless, you are my protector.

When lions clamp down on my guts, you are the teeth-breaker and my healer.

When I am buried, you call me out of the ground.

When I was dead in my sins, you lived, died, and rose alive so that I might live.

You have never left me.

You have always been with me even when I did not know nor loved you.

You have always been there.

And I will forever worship you.

My God.
